On a normal typing test a mistake costs you a fraction of a percentage point and you type straight past it. In real work it costs you three keystrokes, the wrong one, the backspace and the correction, and sometimes it costs somebody else an hour because nobody noticed. That asymmetry is why accuracy is worth training on its own terms rather than as a number next to your speed.

This drill enforces it. A character that does not match the passage is not accepted, so you cannot move on until you get it right. Your accuracy will read 100 percent at the end of every run, which is the point: the only variable left is how much time the mistakes cost you.

Why a refused key teaches more than a counted error

Because it interrupts you at the moment the habit is forming. When a wrong character is accepted, your fingers carry on and the mistake becomes something to be tidied up later, or not at all. When it is refused, the sequence stops until the right key is pressed, and the correction happens where the error happened.

It also makes the cost visible in the right currency. A test that reports 94 percent accuracy tells you nothing about what those errors were worth. A drill that stops dead tells you exactly what they were worth: the time it took to get going again.

They are ordinary English words, not obscure ones, chosen because of the letter sequences inside them. Doubled letters that are easy to single, such as occurrence, accommodate and committee. Vowel pairs that fingers reverse, such as receive, believe and weird. Words whose middles are typed from muscle memory rather than read, such as separate, definitely and restaurant.

Nothing in the list is a trick. If a word here consistently defeats you, it is defeating you when you write emails too, and it is a specific, fixable thing rather than a vague sense of being error-prone.

How to use it in practice

Run one minute at a pace that feels slightly too careful. When you are refused a key, do not speed up afterwards to make the time back; that is how a single mistake turns into a run of them.

Compare across sessions using time rather than accuracy, since accuracy is fixed at 100 by design. Fewer refusals and a higher words per minute at the same care level is real improvement. Then go and take a normal 1 minute test: the accuracy figure there is the one this drill is meant to move.
