The typing test runs in your browser

The typing test itself is entirely client-side. The passages you type, your keystrokes, and your live scores are processed by your own browser and are never sent to a server. There are no accounts, no sign up forms, and no uploads involved in taking a test.

Local storage

TypeBurstsaves the following in your browser's local storage:

• Your personal best per test duration, under keys of the form typeburst:pb:<page>:<seconds>, each holding a single number. A best set with punctuation or capitals adds :p, :c or :pc to the end of its key.
• A history of finished tests under typeburst:history:v1, holding the date and time, WPM, net WPM, accuracy, CPM, duration, word list and page for each run, plus its consistency, its weakest keys, the passage options it used and the letters of a key drill, capped at the 200 most recent.
• Per-key totals of your last 20 runs under typeburst:keys:v1: for each key, how often it was typed, how often it was wrong and the summed time before it. This is what the weak keys analysis reads.
• Small settings you choose, under other keys that start with typeburst:: the last test length per page, the passage options, the finger guide and large text switches, the ticks on the practice plan and, where a consent banner is shown, your choice in it.

All of it stays on your device. Nothing is copied to a server, so there is nothing for us to look up, hand over or lose, and equally nothing to restore if you clear it. You can see your history, export it as JSON or CSV, import it on another device, or delete it outright on the progress page, and clearing your browser's site data for this website removes all of it.

What is deliberately not stored anywhere, on your device or ours: the text you typed, and no single keystroke or its timing; only the per-key totals above.

When you type your own text, it is compressed in your browser and written into the address after #text=, so you can share it as a link. That puts the text in the address bar and in your browser history, like any address you visit, but the part of a link after the # is never sent to a server, ours included. The methodology page sets out exactly what is measured and what happens to it.

Cookies, analytics and advertising

TypeBurst may use cookies and similar technologies for basic site analytics, and to show advertising that helps keep the site free to use. When ads are shown, the advertising networks we work with (such as Google AdSense or Ezoic) and their partners may set their own cookies or use similar technology on your device to serve ads, measure performance, and limit how often you see the same ad. These third parties may collect information such as your IP address, device and browser type, and browsing activity on this and other sites, in line with their own privacy policies.

If you are visiting from the EEA, the UK, or another region with similar rules, you will be asked for consent before any non-essential cookies or personalised ads are used, through a consent banner on the site. You can change your choice at any time from that banner, and declining consent does not stop you from using the typing test.

Your choices

You can clear cookies and site data at any time through your browser settings, and many browsers let you block third-party cookies outright. Where available, you can also opt out of personalised advertising directly through the ad network handling it, for example via Google's ad settings.

Hosting

The site is hosted on Vercel. Like most hosting providers, Vercel may process standard technical request data (such as IP addresses) to serve the site and keep it secure. See the Vercel privacy policy for details.
